Precautions when using this product

Precautions for cutting and processing

(1)Cutting and processing this product will generate conductive dust particles. This dust may cause malfunctions in machining tools if it comes into contact with electroniccomponents. Implement measures to eliminate dust (e.g., dust extraction, anti-static measures, covers protecting electronics) when cutting and processing this product. We also recommend use of masks to protect against dust inhalation.

(2)Dust generated during the processing of this product may result in explosions if ignited. Deploy dust collectors and/or other appropriate measures to prevent the dispersion of machining swarf when processing this product. Avoid processing near open flames or use of open flames while processing.

(3)Dispose of cutting particles and cutoffs from processing as industrial waste.

(4)While this product is conductive, wired electrical discharge machining is not possible.

(5)The hardness of carbon fibers will reduce the tool life of carbide tools roughly by half compared to use for processing steel. We recommend using CBN or better tools.

(6)Use appropriately selected sharp tools for processing such as cutting or drilling. Using blunt tools may result in peeling of the material at the exit point of drilling. To prevent peeling of the material, we recommend drilling pilot holes and using end milling processes or drilling holes from both surfaces of the material to reduce burdens on the surface layer of the material.

(7)Failure to secure the material properly during machining may cause the material to slip from the chuck, which in turn may result in injury. Make sure the material is adequately secured, but without deformation.

(8)Plate surfaces without milling or other processing marks have a resinous skin attached. Remove this skin before use through machining. Leaving the skin on while processing may result in resin layer cracks initiating at the exit point. We recommend removing 1 mm or more of this skin layer.

Precautions when adopting this product as a product component

(1) Some of the carbon fibers contained in this product constitute cargo as set forth in items 1 to 15 of Appended Table 1 of the Export Trade Control Order. You must thereforetake proper legal steps for handling this product.

(2) The material is made from layers of felt-form carbon fibers. Certain surfaces may have a pronounced fibrous pattern.

(3) Nonwoven carbon fibers are layered in the thickness direction. This makes the product less resistant to loads orthogonal to the thickness direction. Use so that external loads are applied parallel to the thickness direction. If processing on the sides is required (tapping, etc.) tighten to 0.5 T or less. Cracks may occur in the layered direction if this is exceeded. We also recommend keeping the tap diameter on the sides to less than half the thickness of the sheet. Cracks in the layered direction are more likely to occur if this is exceeded.

(4) The tensile strength of this product is at least equivalent to aluminum (A5052). However, the tensile modulus of elasticity (22 Gpa) is about 30% that of aluminum (A5052) and about 10% that of steel (SS400). This means that the resulting strain when subjected to the same load may be greater than with metal materials; with certain applications, breakage may occur earlier. Additionally, it lacks the toughness (ductility) of metal materials. When considering using the product to replace a metal material, make sure the design accounts for the intended use and characteristic values of the product.

(5) The fatigue strength of this product is approximately 50% of the maximum tolerable load. For use over extended periods, avoid loads that exceed the fatigue strength.

(6) Sufficient strength may not be guaranteed or processing itself may be difficult for locally thin areas. In these situations, please consult us beforehand.

(7) The product incorporates thermosetting resins. We recommend using the product in temperatures not exceeding 100℃. Please consult with us if you expect use under temperatures exceeding this.

(8) Friction with the product may produce small amounts of dust. When considering use for applications for which the presence of dust would pose risks, coat the product or take comparable measures. For example, use clean rooms, etc.

(9) The data shown represent typical measured values. They are not guaranteed.

(10) Before use, perform sufficient testing based on the actual conditions of use (e.g., temperatures, chemicals, loads). Confirm that the product meets your criteria for performance and efficacy. For product designs, do not rely solely on theoretical calculations of strength. Make sure the design makes use of knowledge from experience of processing, etc.

(11) The manufacture of this product assumes use in general industrial applications. Do not use the product for food, medicine, or other applications where it will make contact with bodily fluids and internal organs. Under no circumstances should the product be used for applications in which any part of the product may remain within the body. When used in production line equipment, take care to avoid contamination of flow lines.

(12) Avoid using the product for the applications listed below, which pose high requirements for safety and reliability (described as “specialized applications” hereunder). Futaba Corporation rejects all liability for loss of life, injury, or property damage caused by failures of this product, including product damage and breakage, when used for specialized applications. Please consult our staff beforehand if you are considering using the product for any specialized applications. Specialized applications: aerospace devices, transportation devices, medical devices, power generation control devices, nuclear power related devices, military devices,
information processing devices of a highly public nature, heating equipment, combustion equipment, disaster prevention and security equipment, various safety devices, and items for work at height that may result in injury or loss of life (e.g., construction materials, stepladders, scaffolding)

(13) If you are using the product in applications requiring safety considerations, perform adequate testing of the product’s safety performance before such use.

(14) Storing this product under conditions that exceed its load bearing capacity may result in warping or deformation. Store so that no loads are applied to the product.

(15) Avoid storing in locations where the product may be exposed to direct summer sunlight. Avoid transporting or storing in areas exposed to high temperatures and humidity.

(16) The surface of the product may sustain scratches if handled improperly during transport or used continuously for extended periods. Handle the product with care.
